Vacancies for summer interns, 2011

Who are you?

We’re a small company based in Kettering. The office is a bright business unit located in the Kettering Business Exchange on Rockingham Road, very handy for the town centre, restaurants and pubs.

What do you do?

We build web applications for clients like this one, using PHP, jQuery and JavaScript, MySQL and other related frameworks and tools. There are always a couple of smaller projects going on too, but the primary goal is to build a set of hosted web applications for business productivity, for rental by small businesses.

So what’s this “intern” business?

I’d love to be able to help those who are new to the industry to get a bit of real-world experience. In return for this, it would be great to have a hand with some of the projects we’re doing.

As an intern, you would gain valuable experience to put on your CV. Also, there’s a strong chance of freelance work or other regular work with us further down the track.

What sort of things would I be doing?

A bit of everything, hopefully. I’m an all-rounder and I like working with other people who also go beyond the narrow silos you find in some agencies. So you could be doing little bits of wireframing, design, front end coding, SEO, CSS, hacking WordPress, backend coding, database work, automation, server admin, release management and more, depending on your abilities and interests. We try to follow good practices like bug-tracking and using version control software that will stand you in good stead for the future.

What sort of person are you looking for?

Someone bright and interested in a career in web design and/or web development. Interest, attitude and enthusiasm are more important than experience, though if you are already familiar with the basics of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP, that would be great. In our industry, as in any other, you tend to get on better if you’re hard-working, love learning new things, are punctual, have good written English, are able to communicate your ideas clearly in conversation, enjoy getting things done and have good attention to detail.

What’s the time commitment you’re looking for?

It’s flexible both in terms of duration and how many hours a week are involved, but this is a serious investment in time and effort for me so I’m looking for a serious level of commitment from the successful applicant or applicants, however many hours a week are involved.

If this sounds of interest, please get in touch with me, Ian Anderson, at ian at versosystems.com or on 07973 542 530
